Founded in Illinois in 1952, the chain grew to over 1,000 locations in the 1960s. They were purchased by Consolidated Foods in 1964. Their jingle "Don't cook tonight, call Chicken Delight", emphasizing their delivery service, was widely broadcast on American radio. They were known by their use of Plymouth Valiants Volkswagen Beetle cars for deliveries that featured a huge plastic chicken on the roof. By the late 1960s, however, Chicken Delight in the US was a troubled operation. Today, some of the old US stores operate independently under names reminiscent of the original.

Chicken Delight in Rahway was opened in September 1965. In September 2012, it was sold for only the second time it's long history.  In the few months since the acquisition, Chicken Delight has undergone a major interior face lift and revamped the menu by introducing a healthier-options for lunch and updating the more traditional chicken, ribs, and seafood combination offerings. In addition, it has returned to serving its made-to-order chicken parts in the iconic Chicken Delight bucket. They hope to serve the residents of Rahway and it's neighbors for the next 50-plus years.
